Greek Authorities Seize 93kg of Cocaine Smuggled from Ecuador

Greek authorities say customs agents seized 93 kilograms of cocaine at a port in the northern city of Thessaloniki. The Independent General Revenue Authority said (Independent Authority for Public Revenue/IAPR) the cocaine was found on a ship sailing from Ecuador to Thessaloniki carrying a cargo of bananas that were then to be shipped overland to Romania by a French company. In a statement released Friday (9/8), IAPR said customs agents scanned a container with X-rays and found 80 packages hidden inside the container's cooling system. “Inspectors immediately seized the drugs and the container and handed the drugs over to the police…investigations to trace the recipient of the drugs are ongoing,” the IAPR said in a statement. According to officials, the street value of the cocaine is estimated at around 2.9 million euros, or around 50.53 billion rupiah at the current exchange rate. Last year, Greek customs agents made a similar discovery. In May, more than 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds) of cocaine were also intercepted at the port of Thessaloniki and in a shipment of bananas from Latin America.
