Tiger Injures Theme Park Staff in Australia

A caretaker at Australia's Dreamworld theme park was attacked by a tiger at the park on Monday (September 2), emergency responders said. The caretaker suffered deep cuts to his arm and was rushed to hospital. Queensland Ambulance Service said the animal handler, a woman in her 30s, suffered “a laceration to her arm” but was in a stable condition. “Dreamworld confirms an incident involving one of our trained tiger handlers and a tiger at our park,” the park said in a statement. “Our immediate focus is on supporting our members. “This is an isolated and rare incident, and we will conduct a thorough evaluation.” Located in Australia's tourism hub on the Gold Coast, Dreamworld calls itself the largest theme park in the land of the kangaroos. The “Tiger Island” area of the theme park has nine Sumatran tigers and Bengal tigers. Related promotional materials invite visitors to “be awed by the strength and power (of the tiger) when it's time to eat.” Previously, four people died on the ride. Thunder River Rapids at Dreamworld Australia experienced a malfunction in 2016. (rs)
