All Polling Stations in Azerbaijan Closed, Ruling Party Projected to Lead in Parliamentary Elections

Polls closed Sunday night in Azerbaijan's snap parliamentary elections, the first since the country regained full control of its breakaway region in a lightning offensive last year. Previous elections held since the country's independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s have not been seen as entirely free or fair, and the vote for the Milli Mejlis parliament is unlikely to bring significant change to the body dominated by President Ilham Aliyev's New Azerbaijan Party. Aliyev’s father, Heydar, ruled Azerbaijan from 1993 until his death in 2003. Ilham then took over. The two ruled with an iron fist, suppressing dissent as the country of nearly 10 million people on the shores of the Caspian Sea enjoyed growing wealth from its vast oil and natural gas reserves. The ruling party won 69 of the 125 seats in parliament, with most of the rest held by smaller pro-government parties or independents. The Musavat Party, the main opposition formation, fielded 34 election candidates but only 25 registered. The opposition Republican Alternative party fielded 12 candidates.
