Afghan Girls Suffer 3 Years After US Troop Withdrawal

Washington — Three years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan have brought misery to girls and women in the country, critics of the hardline regime say. Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this week marked the third anniversary of the U.S. troop withdrawal, but advocates want to see Washington take a tougher stance on the dire human rights situation there. After the Taliban came to power for three years in Afghanistan, the visible and common sight is the suffering of girls and women in general. For example, Parwana Malik was sold into marriage shortly after the American troops withdrew, three years ago. She was nine years old. She is not alone. Local media have reported on girls as young as seven or eight being married off to Taliban officials. Parwana was photographed for the nonprofit organization Too Young to Wed, which literally means “too young to marry.” Stephanie Sinclair is the founder of the organization. “What the Taliban are doing to women and girls is truly a crime against humanity. Afghan girls and women inside the country are really suffering,” Sinclair said. President Joe Biden issued a statement on the anniversary honoring the members of the United States …
