The suffering of Afghan girls and women three years after the American withdrawal

The three years of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan have brought suffering to Afghan girls and women, say critics of this harsh regime. As President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris marked this week the third anniversary of the US withdrawal, VOA correspondent Anita Powell reports that activists are demanding that Washington do more about the shocking human rights situation in Afghanistan. The Taliban want military parades to become the symbol of their three-year rule in Afghanistan. But the true picture of this regime unfolds in the photographs of children being sold into marriage. Parwana Malik was sold to get married shortly after the US forces withdrew, three years ago. She was only nine years old. She is not an exception. Local media reports about girls as young as 7 or 8 who are given as brides to Taliban officials. Parwana was photographed by the nonprofit Too Young to Marry, founded by Stephanie Sinclair. “What the Taliban are doing to women and girls is absolutely a crime against humanity.
