Israeli forces kill five militants in West Bank

The Israeli military said on Thursday it killed five militants in the West Bank as it carried out counter-terrorism operations for the second day in a row. Israeli forces killed the militants inside a mosque where they were hiding in the town of Tulkarem, the army said. The Israel Defense Forces identified one of the militants as Mohammed Jaber, a commander of the Islamic Jihad group, and said he had been involved in multiple attacks on Israelis. Israeli forces killed at least nine people on Wednesday during raids and airstrikes in and around the city of Jenin. The militant group Hamas said 10 of its fighters were killed. Israeli troops and settlers have killed more than 640 Palestinians in the West Bank since the Gaza war began last October, while Palestinian attacks have killed at least 19 Israelis. Israeli forces have repeatedly carried out raids in the West Bank, saying the aim is to prevent possible attacks. Hamas has called the attacks part of a larger plan to expand the war in Gaza and blamed the escalation on US support for Israel.
