South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled Thursday that most of the country's climate goals violate the constitution, a landmark victory for young environmental activists who wept with joy on the steps of the courthouse. The first such case in Asia brought by children and adolescents, naming embryos as lead plaintiffs, claims that South Korea's legally binding climate commitments are inadequate, violating their constitutionally guaranteed human rights. “Just now, the Constitutional Court ruled that the government’s lack of a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 2031 to 2050 is unconstitutional,” said Yoon Hyeon-jeong, a young activist. “The court ruled that our right to live in a life safe from the climate crisis must be guaranteed,” she continued, struggling to finish her words as she choked on tears. The court ruled that the government’s limited climate targets were unconstitutional because they “did not adequately protect people’s fundamental rights,” the plaintiffs’ legal representatives said after the hearing.
