Ireland Reveals 'Shocking' Abuse at Religious Schools

An Irish minister on Tuesday (3/9) called the results of a government-ordered inquiry into decades of alleged historical sexual abuse at religious schools in the country “shocking.” The report found almost 2,400 allegations of sexual abuse in more than 300 schools across Ireland recorded by the religious orders that ran the schools. Education Minister Norma Foley said it was the first time such a scale of abuse had been revealed, and it was “absolutely shocking.” The investigation uncovered 2,395 allegations involving 884 different alleged perpetrators of abuse, at day schools and boarding schools, currently or in the past, run by religious orders. The alleged abuse dates back to the 1970s, with about half of the alleged abusers believed to be dead. “(The report) covers schools across the country,” Foley told reporters in Dublin. “The level of abuse is shocking,… and so is the number of alleged perpetrators of abuse,” he added. The inquiry has contacted 73 religious orders that ran or still run schools in Ireland, 42 of which have records of alleged past sexual abuse.
