Immigrant-related crime in New York has raised concerns among many city residents, some of whom blame the influx of undocumented immigrants in the past two years. VOA correspondents Aron Ranen and Igor Tsikhananka spoke with law enforcement officials, politicians, activists and immigrants about the controversial issue. The debate over New York's status as an immigrant-friendly city came to a head in January this year after an attack on two police officers in Times Square, allegedly by a group of immigrants. Currently, local law enforcement is not allowed to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Even when immigrants are convicted of crimes and released, immigration authorities are often not notified, preventing their possible deportations. New Yorkers seem to be divided on the issue. “I think the courts should communicate with federal immigration authorities and deport those who commit crimes,” says New York resident Marie Shultz. “Many hotels have immigrants. I have never had any problems with them. We have the Statue of Liberty here, with the message 'Help the suffering, the poor and those who want to be free'.
