The Manipur government ordered the closure of schools from Saturday (September 7) after a rocket attack by rebels left one person dead and six others injured. Fighting broke out in the northeastern state more than a year ago between the Hindu-majority Meitei community and the Christian-majority Kuki group. The conflict has escalated since then, pitting communities that previously lived side by side along ethnic lines into hostilities. The state government said all schools in the state would be closed on Saturday, when classes usually take place, to ensure the “safety of students and teachers.” A day earlier, rebel groups launched rockets in the state's Bishnupur district, an attack local police said was linked to “Kuki militants.” Police said a 78-year-old man was killed in the attacks and six others were injured. Officers responding to the attacks “came under fire from suspected Kuki militants, but police teams retaliated and repelled the attack,” the statement said. Local media reports said the elderly man was killed when a rocket hit the residence of the late Mairenbam Koireng Singh, a former chief minister of Manipur.
