World Must Recognize Gonzalez as President-Elect

Caracas — Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Thursday (September 5) that the world should recognize candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the country's president-elect after a disputed election. President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of the presidential election on July 28, but many in the international community refused to recognize his victory. “The world knows Edmundo Gonzalez is the elected president and Maduro was soundly defeated,” Machado said during a virtual appearance. “I understand that at some point, pressure was put on the regime to actually publish the results, as stated in the law in Venezuela. However, they will not do it because the results will prove that we won,” Machado said. “I think it has come to a point where we need to move forward… and this is the moment where Edmundo Gonzalez must be recognized as the elected president of Venezuela,” he said. The United States, the European Union and several Latin American countries have refused to recognize Maduro's victory without seeing detailed voting results. Venezuela's electoral authority said it could not provide full details of the election results, citing a cyberattack on its systems.
