BEIJING — Chinese authorities said that the United States (US) and China held integrated military commander-level talks for the first time on Tuesday (10/9). The talks come amid efforts to stabilize military ties and avoid misunderstandings, especially in regional flashpoints such as the South China Sea. Washington has been trying to open new channels of regular military communications with Beijing since relations plunged to a historic low after the US downed a Chinese surveillance balloon last year. Admiral Sam Paparo, head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, held a video call with Wu Yanan, commander of the Southern Theatre Command, Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). The areas under the jurisdiction of the US Indo-Pacific Command include the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, two regional hot spots of tension that are also flashpoints in US bilateral relations. The two sides held “an in-depth exchange of views on issues of mutual concern,” China's Defense Ministry said in a readout.
