HANOI, VIETNAM — Emergency workers raced to evacuate thousands of people from floodwaters Tuesday (September 10) after Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam, killing 63 people and leaving 40 missing. Yagi hit Vietnam on Saturday (7/9). With winds of more than 149 kilometers per hour, Typhoon Yagi is the strongest typhoon to hit northern Vietnam in 30 years, according to weather experts. The storm knocked out bridges, ripped roofs off buildings, damaged factories and triggered widespread flooding and landslides. Weather experts say the country's densely populated north, which is a major manufacturing hub for global technology companies including Samsung, is battling historic flooding. Authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings for 429 communes in 17 northern provinces. Rescuers are trying to reach residential areas to rescue the elderly and children. On social media, families of those trapped in the floods are posting pleas for help and supplies. In Hanoi, communities along the fast-flowing Red River were also partially submerged, with people forced to evacuate by boat. The Red River flows through the Vietnamese capital.
