Islamabad, Pakistan — Pakistani and Afghan border security forces engaged in heavy clashes on Saturday (7/9), which reportedly resulted in several casualties on both sides. Security officials and residents from both sides reported that the war zone lies between Khost Province on Afghanistan's southeastern border and the neighboring Kurram district of Pakistan. The conflict reportedly broke out when Taliban forces attempted to establish a security post in Afghan territory, prompting Pakistani forces to open fire to stop the activity. Pakistani officials say neither Pakistan nor the Taliban can unilaterally build new posts under a mutual agreement on the nearly 2,600-kilometer (1,600-mile) border between the two countries. Various sources reported that the ongoing heavy clashes have injured at least five Pakistani soldiers, including an officer, and more than four Afghan border guards. Pakistani and Afghan authorities have not commented on the fighting. It is the second time in recent days that the two countries have clashed over the construction of a disputed Afghan border post.
