Second Year Without School, Gaza Children's Futures Threatened

This week, the Qudeh family’s children should have been returning to school. Instead, they were staggering along, carrying rubble from destroyed buildings to sell. The debris will be used to build graves in the cemetery that now houses their home in southern Gaza. “In other countries, people our age are studying,” said 14-year-old Ezz el-Din Qudeh, as he carried blocks of concrete with his three brothers, the youngest of whom is 4. “We can't do that. We have to work beyond our capacity just to survive.” As Gaza begins a second school year without classes, most school-age children are busy helping their families survive amid devastating Israeli attacks. Children walk barefoot through dirt roads to carry water in plastic jerrycans from distribution points to their families living in tent cities filled with Palestinian refugees.
