A fuel tanker exploded after colliding with a truck carrying passengers and livestock in northern Nigeria's Niger state, killing at least 52 people, rescuers said Monday (9/9). Ibrahim Husseini, spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), told AFP that the victims were buried in mass graves after the crash and explosion that occurred early Sunday. “The incident occurred when a gas tanker truck carrying fuel collided with a trailer carrying passengers and livestock,” SEMA said in a previous statement. Two other vehicles, a tow truck and a pickup truck, were also involved in the incident, he added. More than 50 livestock were also burned alive. Fuel tanker explosions are common in Africa's most populous country, where roads are poorly maintained. Residents often try to siphon off fuel after an accident, exacerbating the risk of an explosion. (ah/rs)
