A tropical disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of Texas and Louisiana this week, and is expected to develop into a tropical storm and possibly even a hurricane, the U.S. National Weather Service said. The system is expected to move slowly northwest over the next few days, moving near and along the Gulf of Mexico and Texas coasts, the weather service said Sunday (9/8). “A tropical storm is expected to form within the next day or two,” the weather service said Sunday afternoon. Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service in Lake Charles, Louisiana, said in a weather briefing Saturday evening that parts of Southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana will see “a lot” of rain in the middle and end of the week. The tropical disturbance comes after an unusually quiet August and early September for the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30. The season is expected to peak Tuesday, Jones said.
