Cambodia Receives $500,000 in Military Equipment from Indonesia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodia recently received military equipment, including pistols, rifles, and ammunition, worth $500,000 (around 7.7 billion rupiah) from the Indonesian government. The aid distributed by Indonesia to Cambodia on August 29 included 150 rifles; 20 G2 Elites pistols; 500 thousand M16 bullets; and 500 thousand pistols. Geopolitical observers see the aid as a positive sign that could build good relations between the two countries and modernize Cambodia's military, as well as quell criticism from the West that Cambodia is leaning towards China. In addition, observers also see it as strategic military diplomacy by Indonesia, a member of the ASEAN bloc that wants to prove that it also has military influence in the region. Political geopolitical observer Seng Vanly told VOA Khmer that the technical assistance and new weapons provided by Indonesia to Cambodia will deepen the relationship between the two countries, in particular, this assistance meets Cambodia's practical needs in military modernization. “Cambodia is really trying to diversify its security and military relations between countries in the region and abroad, especially countries that have relations with the West to show that Cambodia is not only relying on military and security cooperation with China,” Vanly said.
