USA, new sanctions against Russian state media

WASHINGTON – The US State Department announced new sanctions on Russian state media on Friday, accusing a Kremlin-controlled outlet of working closely with the Russian military and organizing fundraising campaigns to buy sniper rifles, bulletproof vests and other equipment for soldiers fighting in Ukraine. In the past, the United States has imposed sanctions on RT media for spreading Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, but Friday's charges suggest that the body's role goes beyond influence operations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that RT is an essential part of the Russian war machine and its efforts to undermine the democratic allies of the United States. “RT wants its covert intelligence capabilities, such as its long-standing disinformation propaganda efforts, to remain hidden.” Secretary Blinken stated on Friday. “Our most powerful countermeasure to Russia's lies is the truth. Let's reveal to the public what the Kremlin is trying to do under the cover of darkness.” RT has created websites that pretend to be legitimate news sites to spread disinformation and propaganda in Europe, Africa, South America and elsewhere, according to officials.
