President Joe Biden played down a threat from Russian leader Vladimir Putin of war with the West if Ukraine's allies allow it to use long-range weapons deep inside Russia. It is a request that Kiev is pushing hard, but although the issue was expected to be one of the main topics of a meeting on Friday between Mr Biden and British Prime Minister Keith Starmer in Washington, there was no announcement of any decision after it.
