House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Republicans are threatening a Trump-inspired government shutdown to “impose Trump's Project 2025 on the American people.” In his weekly press conference on Thursday (9/12), Jeffries told reporters, “Once again, we are at a crossroads. The MAGA Republicans want to shut down the government. They are determined to cram Trump's 2025 plan onto the American people and impose extreme cuts.” Jeffries said Democrats would reject a short-term spending bill that includes Trump provisions or delays the 2025 spending bill until next year. He added that he called on Republicans to partner with Democrats to reach common ground and avoid a Trump-inspired government shutdown. He noted that Republican leaders in both the House and Senate have supported the legislation reached through the Bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act — a spending framework — that sets government spending levels for fiscal years 2024 and 2025. He claimed Republicans walked away from the deal.
