A Syrian is arrested on suspicion of planning to kill German soldiers

German authorities said Friday that a suspected Islamic extremist has been arrested in connection with planning an attack on German soldiers during their lunch break in Munich. According to the authorities, he intended to kill as many soldiers as possible to cause as wide a feeling of insecurity as possible among the population. According to the Munich public prosecutor, the 27-year-old Syrian is a suspected supporter of radical Islamic ideology. He said the suspect bought two machetes, each about 40 centimeters long, earlier this month and allegedly planned to attack soldiers with them. The suspect was brought before a court on Friday after his arrest the day before, the prosecutor's office said. His name was not published in accordance with German privacy rules. The arrest followed the August 23 attack in Solingen that left three people dead and eight injured. A 26-year-old Syrian suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack. He was an asylum seeker who was due to be deported to Bulgaria last year, but reportedly disappeared for a while and evaded deportation.
