Germany Detains Syrian Man Allegedly Plotting to Kill Soldiers with Machete

German authorities said Friday they had arrested a 27-year-old Syrian man suspected of planning to attack German soldiers with a machete, a plot that they said was motivated by radicalism. The suspect, “suspected of being a follower of radical Islamic ideology,” was arrested on Thursday (12/9) on charges of planning “serious acts of violence that endanger the state.” According to prosecutors in Munich, the man recently acquired two sharp weapons “about 40 centimeters long.” With the machete, he planned to attack “Bundeswehr soldiers” in the northern Bavarian town of Hof during their lunch break. His goal, prosecutors said, was to “kill as many as possible.” “The suspect wanted to attract attention and create a feeling of insecurity among the population,” prosecutors said. (ft/rs)
