Taiwan said on Thursday (12/9) that the democratic island would never give in despite facing increasing pressure from an increasingly aggressive Beijing. China considers Taiwan to be its territory and Beijing has said it will never abandon the option of using force to control the self-ruled island. In recent years, Beijing has increased military and political pressure on Taipei, sending warplanes, drones and naval vessels around the island almost daily. Chiu Chui-cheng, head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which handles China-related issues, said on Thursday (September 12) that Beijing's “attempts to erase the sovereignty of the Republic of China (Taiwan)” threaten peace and stability across the region.
