New Zealand Intelligence Report Alleges Chinese Meddling

New Zealand's spy agency accused China of “complex intelligence concerns” on Tuesday and warned that New Zealand was vulnerable to foreign interference. In an annual threat report, New Zealand's Security Intelligence Service said several countries were conducting “malign activities” on its territory and accused China's efforts of being “sophisticated and riddled with deception.” Beijing is specifically accused of using front or fictitious organizations to liaise with local groups to replace authentic and diverse views with those sanctioned by the ruling party. In one example, a Chinese-language community news outlet echoed Beijing’s dictated points: “These front organizations often appear to be from the community, but their affiliations, direction and funding sources are actually hidden.” The blunt statement comes as the newly elected, centre-right government shifts New Zealand's foreign policy closer to its traditional Western allies. This comes after years of growing economic ties with China, New Zealand's largest trading partner. In March, Wellington said publicly that Chinese-sponsored groups had played a role in malicious cyber attacks in 2021 and attempted to infiltrate sensitive government computer systems. China has denied allegations it carried out hacking and accused New Zealand of being a puppet of Washington. (jm/ab)
