Putin defies international arrest warrant with visit to Mongolia

Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting Mongolia, which has rejected calls to arrest him despite being a member of the International Criminal Court. This court, 18 months ago, issued an international arrest warrant for President Putin on suspicion of committing war crimes in Ukraine. Before the visit, Ukraine and the European Union called on Mongolia to hand over the Russian leader to the Hague-based court. Mongolia transitioned to democracy in the 1990s, establishing relations with the United States as well. However, it remains economically dependent on its two much larger and more powerful neighbors, Russia and China. Mongolia hosted a state reception for President Vladimir Putin, rejecting international and Russian opposition calls to implement an international arrest warrant for the Russian leader. This is President Putin's first visit to a member country of the International Criminal Court, which 18 months ago issued an international arrest warrant accusing the Russian leader of war crimes in Ukraine.
