Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh in the capital Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday (3/9) as part of his first visit to the country in five years. At a joint press conference with Mongolian leaders, Putin announced that preparations for the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline had been completed. The pipeline project aims to carry Russian gas to China via Mongolia. After the meeting with Khurelsukh, Putin met with Mongolian Parliament Speaker Dashzegviin Amarbayasgalan and Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene. Putin's visit is his first to a country that is a member of the International Criminal Court or ICC since the body issued a warrant for his arrest 18 months ago. Ahead of his visit, Ukraine called on Mongolia to hand Putin over to the court in The Hague, and the European Union expressed concern that Mongolia would not carry out the warrant. A spokesman for Putin said last week that the Kremlin was not worried about that. (jm/ab)
