The United Nations Security Council unanimously agreed Wednesday to extend the long-running peacekeeping mission in Lebanon for another year, but the United States said changes should be made to the operation's mandate in the future. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) – established in 1978 – patrols Lebanon's southern border with Israel. The mandate for the operation is renewed annually, and its current authorization is due to expire on Saturday, August 31. “Today’s unanimous vote is a testament to the international community’s concern for Lebanon,” Lebanon’s deputy UN ambassador Hadi Hachem told the council. “This is a clear message from the esteemed council, which supports stability and ceasefire. It is a sign of hope for all Lebanese who reject war, violence and destruction, Lebanese who want to give peace a chance,” he added. The vote by the 15-member UN Security Council came days after Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Israeli military engaged in one of the fiercest exchanges of fire between them in 10 months, amid fears that Israel's war in Gaza could escalate into a wider regional conflict.
