Moscow — A Russian court on Wednesday (August 28) sentenced an engineer to 18 years in prison for a failed attempt to blow up a military recruitment office, state news agency TASS reported. Since launching its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has cracked down on dissent and protests, with harsh punishments from the courts. Two other people were also sentenced Wednesday, in cases related to Ukraine or the conflict. Accused of trying to blow up an army recruitment office, Artyom Lozovoi, 39, was convicted on multiple charges, including treason. A military court held behind closed doors found him guilty of treason in the form of espionage, preparing a “terror attack” and illegally handling explosives. Lozovoi, a resident of southern Krasnodar, has been in custody since his arrest in 2023. He was caught entering an explosives storage facility, and was about to steal explosives, which he planned to use to blow up a military enlistment office in the central Russian city of Voronezh, the TASS news agency reported, citing the FSB security service. The court sentenced him to three years in prison followed by 15 years of detention in an isolated and heavily guarded colony, and fined him 700,000 rubles …
