UN Chief Visits Timor Leste Ahead of 25th Anniversary of Independence

No — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Timor Leste on Wednesday (28/8), to attend celebrations ahead of the 25th anniversary of the country's referendum and independence. “In the 25 years since the referendum, Timor-Leste has taken consistent steps and worked hard to create a society that meets the needs and aspirations of its people. Your country may not have a large territory, but it has been able to face some of the greatest challenges of our time,” Guterres said. During his visit, Guterres was greeted warmly by children dressed in traditional clothes and cheering enthusiastically on the streets of the capital, Dili. Guterres held a meeting with President Jose Ramos-Horta at the Presidential Palace, where they discussed ongoing challenges and the need for international cooperation in addressing climate change. “Across the Pacific, climate chaos is affecting those least affected. And it is time to act on climate change and strengthen measures to protect the people of Timor,” Guterres told reporters during a joint press conference with Ramos-Horta.
