Woodrow Wilson Presidential Park in Washington, DC Prepares for Climate Change

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The house where President Woodrow Wilson lived after leaving the White House in 1921 is now a museum in a neighborhood that houses embassies from various countries. Much of the house was kept as Wilson's late wife, Edith, left it. However, the Wilsons did not pay much attention to their gardens. The garden became an important project for Elizabeth Karcher, executive director of Wilson House. She envisioned transforming it into a garden that uses fewer chemicals. I want people to be able to come to the park and walk barefoot,” said Elizabeth Karcher. Karcher oversaw the revitalization of a garden that had become overgrown with grass, which was damaging the structural integrity of the walls. Master gardener Leslie Getzinger, who is a member of the Wilson House Advisory Board, helped select most of the native American plants for the new garden design.
