Germany has started random checks at its land borders with five Western European countries, expanding a control system already in place at four other borders. The police checks began at the borders with France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Denmark on Monday morning (16/9) and will continue for six months. The government says it is cracking down on illegal migration and crime following recent extremist attacks in the country. The border controls are testing European unity as they are seen by some as a move away from the spirit of the European Union's free travel arrangement known as Schengen. Richard Koester, head of the Aachen federal police department, said a full inspection of all vehicles was not planned. “It's a little premature to draw conclusions, but we did record people coming in and out, as we expected, and were able to actually locate wanted persons, solve criminal cases, and also take action to deny entry to people,” Koester said.
