Washington State Finally Closes Its Only Execution Chamber

Cal Coburn Brown was the last inmate executed by lethal injection at the prison. He kidnapped, raped and murdered 21-year-old Holly Washa in 1991. Brown was sentenced to death more than 16 years ago before being executed on September 10, 2010. Former Washington State Penitentiary Director Richard “Dick” Morgan, who oversaw executions and later worked to abolish the death penalty in the state, said he was glad to see the execution chamber closed. “I think, in general, taking a life is too much for a public servant to do. I care about the people who have to do that. Asking anyone to kill someone is too much,” he said. Morgan participated in three executions during his 35-year career in the state prison system. He himself said that if given the choice, he would prefer to die by hanging. “From the beginning of the process to death is very short if done by hanging, and seems very long if done by injection,” he explained.
