Gaza Ceasefire Mediation Efforts 'Underway'

Qatar's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire were “ongoing.” The war has raged for 11 months despite several rounds of talks to end the conflict. “The efforts are ongoing and communication channels remain open… the objectives, visits and meetings are still ongoing,” ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari told reporters. Months of behind-the-scenes negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States have failed to halt the fighting between Hamas and Israel, apart from a week-long ceasefire in late November. The latest mediation in Doha and Cairo is based on a framework set out by US President Joe Biden in May and a “bridging proposal” presented to the warring parties in August.
