Crossing Taiwan Strait, Chinese Fighter Jets Follow US Military Planes

China's military said Tuesday (17/9) that several of its warplanes were tailing a U.S. military aircraft passing through the sensitive Taiwan Strait. The People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command said the US aircraft was a P-8A Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, capable of long-range anti-submarine warfare. China’s military forces “scrambled warplanes to follow and monitor the flight of the US aircraft and responded in accordance with the law,” said Li Xi, a senior colonel and spokesman for the command, adding that “the theater command forces will remain on high alert and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability.” The United States Navy has not commented on the incident. China claims the self-ruled island of Taiwan as its territory and opposes other countries' patrols in the waters separating it from the island. Germany on Friday sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait in its first transit of the disputed waters in more than two decades, drawing condemnation from Beijing. In 2001, a U.S. reconnaissance plane and a Chinese navy fighter jet collided mid-air near the island province of Hainan, killing the Chinese pilot.
