Returning Israelis to Northern Territory Now a War Goal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an expansion of the country's war aims on Tuesday (17/9), including the repatriation of northern residents who fled cross-border shelling by Hamas ally Hezbollah. “The political-security cabinet updated the war objectives tonight, so that they include the following section: the safe return of the northern population to their homes,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. Israeli forces and Iranian-backed Lebanese armed groups have been trading near-daily attacks since a Hamas attack on October 7 sparked a war in the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah says the campaign is in support of its Palestinian allies. Hezbollah officials say the group will withdraw if a Gaza ceasefire is reached, while Israel insists it cannot allow militants to remain in the border region in southern Lebanon. The violence has killed hundreds of people, mostly fighters in Lebanon, and dozens of civilians and soldiers on the Israeli side. The fighting has also forced tens of thousands of people on both sides to flee their homes. On Monday (16/9), Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told a visiting US envoy that “military action” was “the only remaining means to ensure the return of the people of northern Israel to their homes.” (lt/uh)
