New South Wales, Australia — The group of medical professionals is called Eyes of Hope. They provide eye health services, and even glasses, for free to people who do not have them. Eyes of Hope was created by three doctors who realised that many homeless people lacked eye care, even though the state of New South Wales often subsidises the service. “We have tried to remove every barrier we can find that homeless people face,” said Marc Eskander, one of them. The reasons why homeless people do not access eye care are due to stigma, nomadic living, and lack of knowledge that they can access such services. Wendy Machin, a homeless person who uses the service, comes to Kirketon Road Centre, a Sydney homeless health service that Eyes of Hope regularly visits. “If you haven’t eaten that day, the priority is to find food, not to get your eyes checked,” he said. Dean Whelan, another homeless man, said he waited three years before getting the eye care he needed. During this time, he could see bodies and movement, but not faces.
