Families of Landslide Victims in India Wait for Bodies to be Found

Health workers and volunteers continued to struggle to deal with a “flood of bodies” recovered from the rubble in the hills of the Indian state of Kerala on Wednesday (31/7), a day after landslides triggered by heavy rains in the region killed 167 people. “We are trying our best, identifying the ID, or the mole, or whatever, or the surgery marks, ornaments, jewelry, or names. We will provide a means to connect each person, and we will connect them to the family, to each city,” said Sister Agnes, a nurse on duty at the Mepaddi community health center in Wayanad. Hopes of finding survivors are fading as hundreds of rescuers work through mud and rocks. Families wait patiently for news of their loved ones, as most of the bodies pulled from the mud and debris are unrecognizable. “My parents are missing and we are waiting for the bodies from there, to be found from there, from the landslide site, and brought here. We are waiting for them here. If their bodies are here, we can identify them,” said a man who is a relative of the victims.
