Pakistan Arrests Radical Leader Who Threatened to Behead Judge

Police in central Pakistan on Monday (29/7) arrested a leader of a right-wing Islamist party on charges of ordering the killing of the country's top judge over his alleged support for the Ahmadiyah minority. According to an official police complaint, Zaheerul Hassan Shah, deputy chief of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan, or TLP, was detained under anti-terrorism laws in Punjab, the country's most populous province. The arrest came a day after Shah was seen in a video that went viral on social media, announcing to a crowd of TLP supporters that he would personally give 10 million rupees or around 585 million rupiah to whoever beheads Chief Justice Qazi Faez. The radical leader delivered a speech in the provincial capital Lahore, accusing the 65-year-old chief justice of “tarnishing the law of the land.” The rally was one of a series of public meetings organised by the TLP in recent days, in several parts of Pakistan, to condemn Esa for granting bail to a member of the minority Ahmadiyya community, accused of posting material against Islam on social media.
