Russia’s war against Ukraine has turned into a grinding and hopeless campaign, and Moscow’s propaganda claims of “victory” are far removed from the facts on the ground, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told Ukrinform in an exclusive interview. Tsahkna noted that after Russia’s initial rapid gains, the war has devolved into slow, exhausting advances with no realistic military prospects, apart from attempts to break Ukraine’s resolve and that of its allies through terror against civilians and cities. “The propaganda narrative of ‘victory’ does not withstand reality. Russia is now further from its initial goals than at the start of the war. Minor territorial gains are all it can show the world, at the cost of immense suffering it has created itself,” he said. The minister stressed that Moscow is not fighting for territory but rather against Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, and against Europe’s entire security architecture. “Our task is to prove every day, through words and deeds, that unwavering support for Ukraine and mounting pressure on Russia make continuing aggression ever more costly and senseless. The more we do now, the sooner this reality becomes undeniable for Russia. That matters far more than minor frontline shifts,” Tsahkna added. His comments come as Estonia has pledged to spend over €10 billion on strengthening its defense by 2029, underscoring the country’s commitment to countering Russian aggression.
