Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister, has been predictably announced as the next NATO General Secretary on June 25. That's according to NATO's press office. "On Wednesday (26 June 2024), the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg," the alliance stated on its website. As Jens Stoltenberg completes his 10-year-old tenure in October, Rutte has three months before he enters his new role on October 1. "It is a tremendous honour to be appointed Secretary-General of NATO. The Alliance is and will remain the cornerstone of our collective security. Leading this organisation is a responsibility I do not take lightly," Rutte wrote on X as the alliance issued a statement. He also revealed that he conducted his last audience with Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, King of the Netherlands, at the beginning of June. Previously, media reported that Rutte's appointment was expected on Wednesday.
