The NATO summit in Washington solidifies Ukraine's NATO membership with a term 'irreversible' "We will continue to support it [Ukraine] on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership. We reaffirm that we will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met," reads the Washington Summit Declaration issued on July 10. During a press conference, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that the support for Ukraine is necessary to achieve a just and sustainable peace in the future instead of further aggression of Russian forces and Ukraine losing its independence. "The quickest way to end a war is to lose a war but that will not bring peace it will only bring occupation. So, unless we want Ukraine to lose, unless we want to bow to Putin, we have to show commitment and resolve," Stoltenberg emphasized during a press conference in Washington. Additionally, the document reiterates that only Russia must be blamed for the war in Ukraine "The joint declaration outlines Russia bears sole responsibility for its war of aggression against Ukraine, a blatant violation of international law, including the UN Charter. There can be no impunity for Russian forces’ and officials’ abuses and violations of human rights, war crimes, and other violations of international law. Russia is responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians and has caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure," says the statement.
