Regional disaster agency talks post-hurricane help

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) co-ordinating unit says it and its key partners are ready to assist its members in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to hit the Caribbean overnight on June 30.  In a release it said over 165 local, regional and international representatives, including heads of government participated in a Caribbean Development Partners Group (CDPG) meeting on June 30. CDEMA executive director Elizabeth Riley and Simon Springett, UN resident co-ordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, co-chaired the CDPG, during which contingency measures were discussed in preparation for the category-four hurricane, the agency said in a statement.  Major stakeholders at the meeting included St Vincent and the Grenadines PM Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Grenada PM Dickon Mitchell, national disaster co-ordinators and relevant government ministers, “who shared updates on national emergency operation centres, logistics, communication as well as relief and response to the levels of impact.” Hurricane warnings are in effect for Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Tobago.  Tobago is under a state of emergency. Trinidad is under a tropical storm warning. The CDEMA’s co-ordinating unit activated its regional co-ordination plan on June 29. It said it is monitoring the hurricane’s progress “and remains committed to supporting its participating states during this time.” The post Regional disaster agency talks post-hurricane help appeared first on Trinidad and Tobago Newsday.
