New Women’s U19 champion to be crowned as Trinidad and Tobago lose to Barbados

Trinidad and Tobago’s U19 women will play Windwards Islands for third place in the West Indies Rising Stars Women’s U19 Championship on July 13 after falling to a 12-run defeat against Barbados at Diego Martin Sporting Complex on July 11. Defending champions TT had their two-match winning streak broken by the Bajans and this result kept the hosts from climbing into the top two. A new champion will be crowned this year as Guyana and Leewards U19s battle for the title at Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA) on July 13. In the final round four tie at Diego Martin on July 11, Barbados batted first and posted a modest 100/5 after their 20 overs. In reply, TT looked good but were restricted to 82/9 after 18 overs, in a rain-affected contest. At the toss, the visitors were sent into bat and they showed early intent. They lost opener Elecia Bowman (four) with the score on 35. However, fellow opener Asabi Callender (40) and number three batter Naijanni Cumberbatch (30 not out) carried the Bajans to 79 for the second wicket, as the former was tipped leg before by Brianna Harricharan. Bowlin for TT, medium pacer Kenika Cassar bagged 2/9 while Harricharan snagged 2/13. In their turn at the crease, the hosts had a terrible start as Samara Ramnath could not repeat her last-game heroics and was caught out by Dicyrah Collymore off Theanny Herbert-Mayers’ first delivery. Amrita Ramtahal perished soon after, followed by Katrina Ruben; both scoring eight. Reeling at 23/3, the partnerships never came as lower order batter Kirah Manpaul top scored with 15 while Deliannys Espinoza scored ten. Because of rain delays, the match was reduced to an 18-over tie and TT could only muster up 82/9. Barbados won via the Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method. Erin Deane (4/12) was the pick of the bowlers for Barbados while Nia Wood and Cumberbatch took 2/14 each. This was TT’s second loss of the competition, having lost their opener and then winning the next two matches. At the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground in St Augustine, Windward Islands defeated Guyana by two wickets. Guyana were dismissed for 60 batting first as no batter could get within double digits. Windwards, however, had a daunting chase and if not for the heroics of Denella Creese (25), they may not have achieved the victorious 6`/8 target in 18.3 overs. At BLCA, Leeward Islands also earned a seven-run triumph over Jamaica courtesy the DLS. Batting first, Leewards rallied to 124/6 from 20 overs and had Jamaica battling at 55/3 from 10.4 overs before the heavens opened. DLS was implemented and Leewards took the win and earned a shot in the final.
