West Indies clobbered by an innings and 114 runs in first England Test

West Indies were destroyed by an innings and 114 runs by England inside three days in the first Test at Lord’s on July 12. Another batting collapse saw the maroon resume day three on a dismal 79/6, trailing the Three Lions by 171 runs, and then skittled out for 136 in total courtesy stellar spells from Test debutant Gus Atkinson (5/61), Jimmy Anderson (3/32) and Ben Stokes (2/25). This came after West Indies were bundled out for a paltry 121 (41.4 overs) in the first innings, batting first on July 10, to which England responded with a healthy 371 on day two. With Joshua Da Silva (nine) and Alzarri Joseph (eight) resuming play on day three, both failed to make any impact with the bat. When Da Silva was dismissed caught behind by Jamie Smith off Anderson’s pace, the visitors fell to 88/7, before Gudakesh Motie entered to play a late unbeaten cameo of 31 not out. Despite his resistance, those around him perished for menial scores as West Indies succumbed for 136 in 47 overs, defeat with two days remaining. Atkinson finished with stunning match figures of 12/106, having played the most detrimental role in West Indies’ brisk removal on day one, taking 7/45. The crushing victory also ushered English fast bowler Anderson to call quits on his decorated, over two-decade long career with the Three Lions. Altogether, he took 704 Test wickets. The second of the three-match Test series continues in Nottingham from July 18-22 and the final tie bowls off in Birmingham from July 26-30. Summarised Scores: WEST INDIES 121 (Mikyle Louis 27, Kavem Hodge 24, Alice Athanaze 23; Gus Atkinson 7/45 and 136 (Gudakesh Motie 31 not out, Alick Athanaze 22, Jason Holder 20; Gus Atkinson 5/61, James Anderson 3/32, Ben Stokes 2/25) vs ENGLAND 371 (Zak Crawley 76, Jamie Smith 70, Joe Root 68, Ollie Pope 57, Harry Brook 50, Chris Woakes 23; Jayden Seales 4/77, Gudakesh Motie 2/41, Jason Holder 2/58). England won by an innings and 114 runs. The post West Indies clobbered by an innings and 114 runs in first England Test appeared first on Trinidad and Tobago Newsday.
