THE Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) has sent a team to Carriacou to help restore power there after the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1. In a statement, the commission said the 18-strong contingent of linesmen left on July 28. Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales was at Piarco International Airport to see them off. “Go there, represent your families, colleagues and Trinidad and Tobago well. We are proud of you,” he told them. The team is expected to do major reconstruction work – installing and straightening poles; stringing, splicing and tensioning of conductors; and installing pole-mounted transformers and related fittings. On July 25, three lines trucks, one borer truck and one 4x4 van, all loaded with ancillary tools and equipment, were shipped to the main island of Grenada in advance of the crew's arrival. In Carriacou, the team will be accommodated in a government housing apartment complex that has been temporarily repurposed as a command post and holding area for line workers. The commission said historically, it has helped other countries with rebuilding their electricity grid after natural disasters. The last time was in The Bahamas in 2019 after Hurricane Dorian.
