PM, National Security Council, security agencies meet

The Prime Minister met with the National Security Council and the heads of the State’s security apparatus on Monday at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s to discuss issues surrounding crime. In a statement, the Office of the Prime Minister said Dr Rowley spoke about the serious concerns with the incidents of violent crime and the continued use of illegal high-powered assault weapons. “(He) discussed with the leadership assembled the need for a more proactive, intelligence driven, targeted and robust approach which is focused on those who are known and suspected to be involved in serious criminality. "The PM also made it clear that the government supported the services and in particular the police service in its carrying out of its duties and responsibilities, provided that they are always done within the legal parameters.” The statement said the services present agreed that following the meeting they would deploy sustained joint operations in a co-ordinated and collaborative manner, particularly in areas where there is a known concentration of criminal activity. The PM was accompanied at the meeting by National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young. Present at the meeting were police commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher, deputy police commissioners Junior Benjamin, Natasha George and Suzette Martin, along with the heads of the ten police divisions. Also present were the Chief of Defence Staff Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel, acting prisons commissioner Carlos Corraspe and Strategic Services Agency director Brigadier General (Ret’d) Anthony Phillips-Spencer.
