Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung stated that cultural diplomacy raises Taiwan’s profile internationally. Wu made the remark in an interview with a local news agency, in which he talked about “Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025,” a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Culture Minister Li Yuan met in February this year and conceived the “Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025” project to facilitate deeper European understanding of Taiwan and to strengthen mutual recognition of the shared values of democracy and freedom with like-minded partners, Wu said. Over 70 art and culture events are planned to be held in 26 countries, the deputy minister said. Items from the collection of Taipei City-headquartered National Palace Museum, including the iconic jade cabbage, are set to be displayed Sept. 11-Dec. 31 at the Czech Republic National Museum in Prague in an exhibit entitled “100 Treasures, 100 Stories: Treasures from the National Palace Museum.” The first Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025 events featured National Symphony Orchestra performances in Austria and Lithuania; Indigenous Vox Nativa Children’s Choir recitals in Germany and the Vatican; performances still to come include U Theater and the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan, Wu added. Li is currently on a visit to Europe, where he hosted the 28th Taiwan-France Cultural Awards ceremony Sept. 8 at the French Academy in Paris. Li’s European itinerary includes a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral to gain insight into its restoration after the 2019 fire and a visit to Czechia to attend the opening ceremony for the National Palace Museum’s historic exhibition.
