Taiwanese art to shine at Barcelona fair

The Ministry of Culture arranged for two artistic teams to participate in Swab Barcelona Art Fair’s Polar and Tropic category Oct. 2-5 in the Spanish city, underscoring the government’s commitment to raising the profile of the country’s contemporary art.   According to the ministry, the cultural division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain collaborated with event organizers to invite Suaveart and SS Space Space to exhibit works spanning kinetic devices, paintings, photography, plant specimens and sculpture.   Suaveart’s exhibition “Camphor Tree as Living Archive: Rooted in Elsewhere” centers on the camphor tree, common to tropical and subtropical regions. The display features Hung Hsin-chieh’s paintings of Cinnamomum kanehirae, documents on specimen collecting and installations by Indonesian artist Aliansyah Caniago, a former artist-in-residence in Taiwan, the ministry said.   Suaveart curator Lee Yi-pei said the works, inspired by Taiwan’s wilderness, aim to share the country’s culture and natural environment with audiences worldwide.   The SS Space Space exhibition, “A Sense of Elsewhere,” will showcase works by Jan Ho, Chiu Chih, Kuo Ping-en and Sara Wu. Curator Sean Tseng said the collection offers visitors a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s artistic perspectives.   Augusta Chang, head of the TECO in Spain’s cultural division, expressed confidence that Taiwan’s diversity and vitality will be reflected through the event, the MOC said.   Additionally, Lee and Tseng will attend the “Taipei as a Node of Innovation” seminar Oct. 5 to explore Taiwan’s key role in contemporary art, the ministry concluded.
