Taiwanese films captivate audiences at Osaka Asian Film Festival

Eight films from Taiwan are taking center stage at the 21st Osaka Asian Film Festival, underway Aug. 29 to Sept. 7.   Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo worked with OAFF organizers to produce “Taiwan: Movies on the Move Expo 2025,” the Ministry of Culture said. The special program includes the feature-length “Unexpected Courage,” the short films “Gurgling” and “The Black Dog,” and a selection of Taiwanese classics, including “Tracing to Expo ’70,” that have been restored by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute.   “Tracing to Expo ’70,” directed by Liao Hsiang-hsiung, was selected as the opening film for the festival, while Shawn Yu’s “Unexpected Courage” is competing for both the festival’s Grand Prix and its Most Promising Talent Award, the MOC said.   Speaking Sept. 4 at screening for Taiwan Night, Director Tseng Chien-lung of the TCC in Tokyo said that he has witnessed enthusiastic support from Japanese audiences for Taiwanese films since he took office. He quoted Culture Minister Li Yuan, who called movies a common language that crosses borders and connects people, and added that the center will continue to build and expand links between Taiwan and Japan using art and films.   The MOC said that previous films featured at OAFF have gone on to success in the Japanese market, and expressed a hope that this year’s films would follow in the footsteps of predecessors like “Kano,” “Our Times,” and “The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful.” (YCH-E)   Write to Taiwan Today at ttonline@mofa.gov.tw
